"Fluid by Nature: the transforming Clownfish" (Raja Ampat, Indonesia)
In this image, we see a brightly colored clownfish nestled safely among the stinging
tentacles of a sea anemone. This iconic scene showcases a perfect symbiosis where the
anemone provides a highly protected home while the fish defends and nourishes its host.
Furthermore, clownfish possess a remarkable biological trait known as sequential
hermaphroditism. All clownfish are born male, and when the dominant female of their group dies, the largest male naturally transitions into a female to take her place. This fascinating dynamic offers a profound double metaphor for the queer community. The symbiotic relationship perfectly represents our ability to create chosen families and safe spaces where we protect each other from a sometimes hostile outside world. Simultaneously, their natural ability to change sex beautifully validates transgender and genderfluid experiences. The clownfish stands as undeniable proof that gender and biology in the natural world are fluid,complex, and deeply adaptable.

How does your identity influence your work?
My identity shapes my unique perspective behind the lens. Wildlife photography is a meditative escape from a noisy world. By quietly observing nature’s diverse creatures, I feel deeply connected to them. Through my work, I aim to share these wonders to inspire mindfulness and a passion for protecting nature.
What message do you hope to convey with your work about the intersection of queerness and biodiversity in nature?
I am convinced that our differences are our greatest strength. Like the clownfish and anemone, we thrive through cooperation. Furthermore, the clownfish’s natural transition from male to dominant female challenges binary expectations. This beautifully mirrors the queer experience, proving that nature's true design is based on fluid, continuous transformation.
What do you think is the importance of highlighting diversity in both nature and society, and how can photography play a role in this?
Highlighting diversity shows that every individual, both in the wild and in society, plays a vital role in a healthy ecosystem. Photography is a powerful tool to foster empathy. It grants visibility to the marginalized and proves that true beauty lies in our magnificent, shared spectrum of differences.
What is your favorite example of queerness in nature?
My favorite example is the nudibranch, often called the drag queens of the sea. These vibrant sea slugs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning any two individuals can mate. Their flamboyant colors and fluid biology beautifully celebrate diversity, proving that nature is infinitely creative and simply refuses to be strictly binary.

Clownfish are famous protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning every individual is born male. They live in strict, female-dominated social structures centered around a single breeding female and a dominant male. When the matriarch dies, the dominant male undergoes a complete, irreversible biological and behavioral transition to become the new female, while a non-breeding helper matures to take his place as the active male. This fluid social dynamic shows that sex and societal roles are deeply adaptable, functioning as a vital evolutionary mechanism for group cohesion and stability. Clownfish share a crucial, symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, keeping their hosts clean and protected within coral reef ecosystems. Today, their greatest threats are climate change—specifically ocean warming and acidification which disrupt the clownfish's sensory systems—and overharvesting for the aquarium trade. Protecting them requires expanding marine protected areas and supporting global coral reef restoration initiatives.
