Why the unicorn of the sea is our symbol

Updated: Jun 8, 2023

The narwhal, often called the "unicorn of the sea," is a unique and mystical creature that captures our imagination. Its long, spiral tusk can grow up to 3 meters in length and is actually a tooth that protrudes from the left side of its upper jaw. But a narwhal symbolizes more than just a mythical creature; it represents uniqueness and authenticity.

In a world where conformity and social pressures can be overwhelming, the narwhal offers a sense of hope and wonder. It reminds us that anything is possible if we embrace our differences and work together towards a more inclusive and biodiverse world. By celebrating the resilience and uniqueness of narwhals, we can inspire people of all backgrounds to embrace their differences and foster empathy.

Narwhals are social animals that travel in pods of up to 20 individuals and have been observed in pods consisting of hundreds of narwhals. They are deep divers and can reach depths of up to 1,500 meters, holding their breath for up to 25 minutes. Narwhals are carnivorous and feed on a variety of fish and invertebrates, such as Arctic cod, squid, and shrimp. They also have a unique vocalization system, with a variety of clicks, whistles, and pulsed sounds used for communication and echolocation.

Despite their importance in the Arctic ecosystem, narwhals are threatened by climate change and loss of sea ice habitat. They are listed as "near threatened" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and are also vulnerable to human activities such as hunting, pollution, and disturbance from shipping and oil and gas development. This puts the health of the Arctic ecosystem and their role as prey for polar bears and killer whales at risk.

To promote conservation efforts and protect narwhals and other species, we need to raise awareness of the importance of different species and work towards sustainable practices that reduce our impact on the different habitats and ecosystem. By doing so, we can ensure the survival of these unique and mystical creatures for generations to come.
